Spine of "Le Sage's historical, genealogical, chronological and geographical atlas"

Condition:

This is a rare copy of the first British edition of the atlas. The atlas's condition is good considering it's age. There are some pencil and ink markings on the inside of the front and back covers dating to circa. mid- to late-1800s. They appear to be related to a previous owner's attempts to trace part of their family tree.

The leather headcap and endband are in poor condition, but the book of hand made leaves is surprisingly tight in its binding. The hand-colored maps, as well as some of the text, are quite lovely, retaining much of their original hues.

Page edges are fragile but there are no tears or repairs. Some minor foxing throughout, with more severe foxing on one map only.

The atlas measures 19.5" x 19.5"

History:

The atlas, which was created as a gift to a royal personage in Great Britain to honor a special occasion, offers a fascinating snapshot of Europe in the early 18th Century.

The atlas has been passed down through many generations of the same family and now must be sold.
